Are your 1:1 meetings with your team turning into mundane status updates, or disconnected casual chats? It's time to take charge and make these meetings truly valuable! As a manager, your goal is to empower your team members and foster their growth and development. 


I have tailored and tweaked the format of how I structure my 1:1 conversations many times, until I have landed on this one simple template that enables effective conversations.

1. Starting Strong: How Are You Feeling This Week? 

Kicking off with a personal check-in sets the right tone. Ask about their weekend and how they're feeling. This builds rapport and establishes a positive connection. If they're facing challenges, take the time to discuss and understand - it's essential to be there for your team.



2. Celebrating Success: Acknowledge this weeks wins

Recognizing your team's hard work and dedication goes a long way.  Encourage them to acknowledge their own wins, and as their manager, add to the list to show you notice and value their efforts.



3. Staying Goal-Focused: Review Progress 

Avoid mundane status updates and focus on goals. Have your team capture their progress in advance. This keeps their eyes on the prize and reinforces goal priorities over busy work. As their manager, review and note any areas for discussion.



4. Navigating Challenges: What Help Is Needed?

Challenges are a part of growth. Be aware of what your team is facing, and offer support and guidance. Empower them to identify solutions themselves - remember, you're a coach, not just a problem-solver.



5. Empowering agenda: What Items Does the employee want to discuss? 

This is the core of the meeting - let your team come prepared with topics they want to discuss. Prioritize their topics, ensuring they drive the conversation. Whether they need a sounding board, guidance, or connections, you're here to support them.



6. Valuable Feedback: Share and Seek 

Create a safe space for feedback - it's a two-way street. Encourage your team to share their thoughts on what they need from you as their manager. If they're hesitant, ask reflective questions based on specific events to prompt their feedback. Also your opportunity to give timely and constructive feedback 



7. Fostering Growth: Any Career Opportunities Ahead? 

Keep your team's career development in mind. Reflect on their goals and consider growth opportunities in the coming weeks. Nurturing their career aspirations is a vital part of your role.



8. Agree the Actions: 

Note Any Agreed-Upon Actions Capture agreed-upon actions to ensure accountability and clarity. Define expectations and timelines, making follow-through easier for both you and your team.
